ERDF funding is intended to further the process of convergence among less developed regions by making businesses more competitive. This is important because it can account for up to 80% of total aid granted, allowing it to be channelled into projects (especially those using advanced technology) which, because of their location and use of local resources, can act as a driving force for regional development.
The Operational Programmes pay special attention to small and medium-sized companies which are considered to be the ones that may be adapted to create a sound base which will permit the proper development of the productive fabric.
