Objective 2 Regions

Objective nº 2 of the Structural Funds is to energise areas with structural difficulties, be these industrial, rural, urban or dependent on fishing. These areas belong to regions whose level of development is around Community average but which, on this scale, suffer from different kinds of socioeconomic difficulties which are often caused by a high rate of unemployment. These difficulties are: Changes in the industrial or services sectors; A decline in traditional activities in rural areas; A state of crisis in urban environments; Difficulties affecting fishing.

Between 2000 and 2006, the beneficiaries of Objective nº 2 of the Structural Funds in Spain were the Autonomous Communities of Aragon, the Balearic Isles, Catalonia, Madrid, Navarre, the Basque Country and La Rioja. Between 2000 and 2006, Structural Funds in the amount of 2,651 million euros (from 1999) will be applied in these areas. The application of these resources is as a result of the terms of multi-annual programming documents, known as Single Programming Documents (SPDoc's) and Programme Complements.
