Precise knowledge of the socioeconomic realities of the regions is absolutely necessary for applying effective regional policies and must be based on adequate and reliable statistics. Currently, at both European and Spanish level, the regional statistics database is becoming more and more developed, insofar as it refers to actions and the evolution of the more structural magnitudes of the regional economies and the most significant variables and indicators for analysing their short-term evolution and the economic situation of the regions.
